Before Illion Was Born

Small-minded man struggling for survival
Fathomed small things in smaller minds
Hundreds seemed huge after ones and tens
Progress exposed faculties beyond the possible
Small-minded man struggled for survival
Fathoming smaller things in small minds
Thousands though huge after hundreds
Boggled small minds unable to imagine
Hundreds of thousands; such an impossibility

Progress forced man’s mind to grow
Despite mind’s constricting timidity
The dreamers and shakers refused
Dismantling shackles with temerity
Could mankind handle the birth of Illion?
How could we count industries’ profit
Not enough numbers to squeeze in
The gigantic leaps of dreamers
Whose first child was named Million

Proud parents couldn’t imagine
Another child bigger or better
Her birth caused awareness of the gigantic
How to fit her into society’s small mind
Lo and behold, there she strotted
The second child named Billion
Now insanity shook itself free
What in the world is going on?
Such growth, such astronomical speed

Mankind traveled thousands of years for Million's birth
Billion made her debut in decades
Trillion, third child, followed suit in less time
What in the world is going on?
Forecasters predicted another birth
Coming soon to a family near you, Quadrillion
Return to math prefix literacy
Remembering math lessons of 1980s
Million’s birth celebrated and welcomed
Billion an unfamiliar word, strange to the tongue
The mind, no hands to grasp, to hold this baby
Billion’s birth made Trillion’s arrival tolerable

Now foretell future generations of wealth
Counted in Latin prefixed math words
Quintillion, Sextillion, Septillion, Octillion
Nonillion, Decillion, Undecillion, Duodecillion
Tredecillion, Quattuordecillion, Qindecillion
Will future generations see that wealth?
To where is the world heading, I wonder
What will money look like, I wonder
How will they carry it, I wonder

The first Illion child has been born
Can’t stop generation’s progress now

--My dream has loved paper so much for so long because it gave influence to the parched voice of a fashionista poet. Finding this outlet, that voice is now replete with expressive sound.
